Distinguished Professor David Fisher, the Ruth N. Halls Professor of Mathematics, has been invited to speak at the 2022 International Congress of Mathematicians, to be held in St. Petersburg, Russia.
Fisher's recent research includes work on a longstanding problem known as Zimmer's conjecture. Very roughly speaking, this asserts that a small-dimensional space cannot have a large-dimensional group of symmetries. It was named after the mathematician Robert Zimmer. In 2017, the conjecture was proven in joint work by Aaron Brown, Sebastián Hurtado-Salazar, and David Fisher.
The International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM) is the largest conference for the topic of mathematics. It meets once every four years, hosted by the International Mathematical Union (IMU). The Fields Medals, the IMU Abacus Medal, the Gauss Prize, and the Chern Medal are awarded during the congress's opening ceremony. Each congress is memorialized by a printed set of Proceedings recording academic papers based on invited talks intended to be relevant to current topics of general interest.
