Foreign Associate Instructors Language Exams

Requirements for entering foreign associate instructors

Graduate assistants who are not native speakers of English must take two English exams before enrolling in classes. If you pass both exams, you will be promoted to the rank of associate instructor at the beginning of the semester that follows the semester in which they pass the exams.

The English language proficiency exam

This is a general exam that tests your facility with the English language. Those who do not pass must take one or more English language improvement courses. You must take this exam each time until it is offered (4 times per year) until you pass. You cannot take the TEPAIC exam (below) until you pass this exam.

The Test of English Proficiency for AI Candidates

The Test of English Proficiency for AI Candidates (TEPAIC) is a more difficult exam that tests whether your command of the English language is sufficient to engage in the instruction of Indiana University undergraduates. The exam includes an oral interview and a written test. You must take this exam each time that it is offered (4 times per year) until you pass. You must pass this exam by the end of your second year.
