The company 84.51(degrees), headquartered in Cincinnati, does the analytics for Kroger. The weekend after the first week of class, they sponsored a "hackathon"--an overnight coding event. Safety first! We had grad student Aaron Cohen drive Math and Biology major and Wells Scholar Kushal Shah to this event. Kushal's team placed 2nd and received the "Best Use of 84.51's Data" award.
According to Shah, "My team developed a customer-facing web application called the Kroger Data Insights Portal, through which customers can analyze their entire purchase history at Kroger through visual dashboards. In addition, customers receive suggestions for more items to buy based on their demographic information and recent patterns. Presenting what we created to the judging panel and all the other hackathon participants was extremely rewarding after working for 24 hours to develop the application. I also had the opportunity to connect with some extremely smart students across different colleges."
