 A team of five IU undergraduates has advanced to the final round of the 2022 Student Research Case Study Challenge.

The Society of Actuaries Research Institute (SOA) is dedicated to advancing education and research for the actuarial profession. As part of its mission, the SOA recognizes the importance of partnering with colleges and universities to help develop future actuaries. With this in mind, the SOA holds annually a Student Research Case Study Challenge, which provides an opportunity for teams of students to apply their actuarial skills on a real-world problem in a business setting.

This year's competition is to analyze the following scenario. A fictional country, Rarita, wants to compete in soccer at an international level, aiming for a positive economic effect on the country. Part of the project is to form a team, given statistics of (fictional) international players.
The IU team used machine learning to form the team, training its algorithm on real data.

The IU team is mentored by Mathematics Rudy Professor Russell Lyons, who also mentors IU's Actuary Club.

The team consisted of: senior computer science major Henry Bobeck, sophomore Finance major Michael Dineen, junior finance and business analytics major Eric Herbst, junior mathematics and economics major Hariharan P V, and junior economics and psychology major Annie Renholzberger.
